•Between 2002 and 2003 there has been an increase in Marriages in England and Wales.

The adverse effects on society of relationship breakdown, and the positive effects of stable couple relationships make a strong case for action.

In England and Wales marriages increased from 255,596 in 2002 to 270,109 in 2003.

There were 8,328 marriages in Northern Ireland in 2004, 571 more than in 2003, a rise of 7 per cent.
