When you have young children, it is very important to safety check each room in your home, garden and sheds and wherever they spend a lot of their time; eg. at the Grandparents home or babysitters. 2as1 has listed some practical ideas to help make your home safe for children:
- Keep all poisonous chemicals, medicines and detergents in a child-proof cupboard.
- Never leave babies or young children alone at home, whether asleep or awake and especially not in charge of looking after even younger children.
- Have a 1 st Aid Kit in the home and in the car.
- Install smoke alarms in key areas, like outside the kitchen and inside children’s bedrooms.
- Cover all unused power points with a child safety cover.
- Place finger jam protectors in doors and corner covers on table tops.
- Have emergency numbers for the police, doctor and ambulance, fire brigade near the phone at all times.
- Keep matches, cigarette lighters, scissors and knives out of reach of children.
- Do not leave a baby or young child in a bath seat or bath cradle or bath tub. There is the danger of the child, slipping, drowning and being scolded.
- Prevent children from choking by constantly checking that there are no small objects on the floor to pop in their mouth.
