Infections & Immunisations
Children > Health

•Immunisation can protect your child against serious infections.

If you prevent your child from being immunised, they will automatically be at risk from catching diseases.

Infections occur when a disease-causing germ, such as a bacteria, virus or fungus, invades the body. To become infected, you must catch the germ (exposure) and have the ability to become infected (susceptibility).

We live in a sea of germs, and everyone gets an infection at least once in a while. However, while most people can recover on their own from most infections, some people experience recurring infections that require antibiotic treatment.

Immunisation is a way of protecting your child against serious infections. It allows their bodies to fight diseases if they were to come into contact with them. If you prevent your child from being immunised, they will automatically be at risk from catching diseases. However, some children are medically unable to have protection, as informed by the GP.

Vaccines stimulate our immune system to produce antibodies without us having to become infected with the actual disease.
A dose of vaccine may contain:

  • a suspending fluid to carry the vaccine into the body
  • preservatives and stabilisers so the vaccine can be stored safely, and
  • an adjuvant to improve the body's immune response.

If your child has contracted an illness and it is causing you and the rest of your family mental and emotional distress, 2as1 Counsellors are specially trained to provide support and help.
